Description

Alfred painted a series of archetypal and picturesque Lakeland old-farm cottages in 1900, where he was no doubt inspired from living nearby in his own family home at Coniston during the same period. In this studied painting he chooses to offer a highly unusual angle looking side-on at the charming whitewashed buildings -note the caged budgerigar hanging in the doorway.

"Outwardly this was charming, especially with its trees that overhung the mossy slates, a bit of garden, in which you saw the rock sticking out, and a few clipped yews absolutely in harmony with the landscape"

(The Lake Counties - W.G. Collingwood, p157)
