Mountain Painter, An Autobiography

by William Heaton Cooper

Mountain Painter is the first-hand experience of a lifetime spent in-amongst the fells, lakes, tarns and crags of the magnificent English Lake District. Written exclusively by William Heaton Cooper, it features every aspect of his life as a painter, writer and climber, whilst providing fascinating insights on working methods, family and friends, and the emotional journey of one of Lakeland’s leading landscape painters.

Only 50 of these beautifully made special editions were ever produced. Each one was bound in Morocco leather by the bookbinders Hunter & Foulis, based in Edinburgh. Sydney Cockerell (son of distinguished bookbinder Douglas Cockerell) provided the endpapers, with a cover design by the pioneering calligrapher Joan Rix Tebbutt. This unique handful of books have been made available, after the publisher Frank Peters found them at home in his attic.

Signed by William Heaton Cooper, the extremely limited editions are numbered 45-50 and come complete with a slip case, gold leaf block edging and cover. An undoubted rare collector’s item to treasure, they are also indicative of the remarkable series of collaborations Cockerell and Tebbutt went on to produce over a number of years.
