Product information

Two Rivers Mill, in Exmoor, Somerset, specialises in hand-made papers for watercolour using traditional processes long abandoned by machine manufacturers, such as the use of flax, followed by tub-sizing and natural loft drying. This has made available again paper with the properties demanded by the 19th century masters. Now you can paint on surfaces similar to the linen hand made paper sought out by Turner, Cotman and Girtin. Two Rivers watercolour paper has a very forgiving nature. Gentle hand making allows fibres to lie laterally in the paper, therefore the colour tends to surface dry, and not be drawn down into the sheet. Tubsizing and natural drying toughens the paper surface and so facilitates smooth brushwork, making corrections and vigorous handling techniques such as washing out, scrubbing and scraping possible. Two Rivers Paper uses flax and cotton, and crystal clear Exmoor water - the purest materials available to the papermaker. Machine-mould manufacture cannot match the results of this combination of careful handmaking. The sheet price is not surprisingly higher, but its aesthetic and handling advantages together with its acid-free archival quality easily offset the cost. Two Rivers TR Original is available in 6 colours: White, Cream, Green, Grey, Oatmeal and Sand, in Imperial sheets. 56x76cm (22x30ins) The White is made in 2 weights, 200lb and 300lb, the remainder in 200lb.
