Winifred Joan Ophelia Gordon Bell

Winifred Joan Ophelia Gordon Bell (neé Billinge) studied animal painting with William Frank Calderon, winning the School scholarship in 1904. She then took figure drawing with Edwin Noble and later held various teaching posts including that of a visiting lecturer at Leamington School of Art.
She took commissions for animal paintings and her clients included HM Queen Alexandra, Lady Moyra Cavendish and other titled names in London society. Her husband was F Lawrence Bell and their daughter was Ophelia Gordon Bell, wife of William Heaton Cooper.
She moved to Windermere in 1942 and was elected to the Lake Artists' Society, contributing over 80 animal pictures to their exhibitions over 20 years.
