Description
Pillar Rock was first climbed in 1826 by a shepherd called John Atkinson, 3 more shepherds climbed it the same year, but it was not until Lieutenant Wilson R.N. ascended it 22 years later that English rock climbing officially began.
It has awed mankind for 150 years, which is not surprising in view of its situation and unique appearance – it is shown rather eerily here by Alfred, as an isolated crag on the breast of a mountain flanking one of the most remote valleys in theLake District.
