Description
Painted late on a summer’s day, from a classic viewpoint on the east shore, William captures the Coniston fells rising prominently over Coniston Water, their vibrant colours heightened by the summer light. A light breeze ripples the water's surface, giving their reflections a mesmerising quality. In the centre, the giant pyramid of the Old Man of Coniston is bathed in sunlight, with the serrated skyline from Brown Crag to Dow Crag to the left. Below them, clouds cast fleeting shadows over Torver Low and High Common, while the dappled tree shadows on the rocky foreground give an interesting lead into the middle and far distances of the painting.
“About a mile or more from the foot of the lake along its eastern shore, beyond Grass Paddocks, two rocky points jut out into the lake, forming between them a small bay. Young oaks toward the lake and older ones inland make this one of the most delightful bits of coastline imaginable. Many families have given their children, as we did, their first lesson in swimming here, and there are rocks from which one can dive into clear deep water.
“From here one looks across Coniston Water to Oxness, the estuary of Torver Beck; to Torver Low and High Commons, with cloud shadows playing over their rounded forms; then steeply up the 2,500-foot step of Borrowdale volcanic rock to the serrated skyline from Brown Crag to Dow Crag, in shadow above the hollow of Goatswater; to the pyramid of the Old Man that falls in curves to the north in front of far-away Swirl How and Wetherlam.
“I chose a July day, typical of high summer, with a light breeze ruffling the water across the main lake, and causing a slight ripple in the sheltered bay. The rocky foreground, dappled with tree shadows, gave an interesting lead into the rocks of the middle and far distances.” – William Heaton Cooper, The Lakes, p.2
