Description
In this charming painting, William expertly captures the changing season across Coniston Water – as the browns, reds, oranges and yellows of the autumn foliage and hills begin to emerge. These warm tones contrast beautifully with the cloud-strewn silhouette of the Old Man of Coniston and its surrounding mountains. A skyline William described in his book Mountain Painter, p. 79, as “one of the finest skylines in England”.
“The winter months are by far the most dramatic in colour, when the distances are anything from thunder blue-black in the shadows to copper and gold in the lights. One cannot speak of distant colour separate from foreground colour, for the richness of autumn foliage has the effect of intensifying all blues, and in winter the great shadows made by the low sun pick up the colour of the air, showing the sculpture of the mountains in strong relief.” – William Heaton Cooper, Lakeland Portraits, p.24.
