Description
Ophelia’s mother Winifred Joan Ophelia Gordon Bell is usually referred to as a “society animal painter”. She was one of three sisters from a London family; Dorothea, who owned the house in St. John’s Wood where Ophelia grew up, also had a large property on the outskirts of Windermere, hence the Lake District connection. There is a reference to Winifred in Heaton Cooper’s autobiography “Mountain Painter” in which he notes that she was "a painter of animals, having been a student at Calderon’s school in London”.
Her paintings are acutely observed and anatomically accurate. She had a way of capturing the spirit of the creatures she portrayed, encapsulating their energy and individual personality, as well as their generic characteristics. Sometimes she painted fantastical creatures like “The Unicorn” and at other times she painted domestic animals such as cats.
Here, this ginger cat named Topaz is delicately picking her way through freshly fallen snow, watched over by a watchful, green eyed black cat. The small shrub at the front appears almost to be a Christmas tree cloaked in a snowy blanket.
