Head of Thirlmere Looking towards Great How & the Dodds - Original Painting by Alfred Heaton Cooper (1863 - 1929)

Description

Long before it was altered, and its namesake village inundated, by Manchester Corporation’s reservoir between 1890 and 1893, Thirlmere had a bridge at its narrowest point near Armboth. This can be seen picked out in bright sunlight under the gleaming woods of Great How, from the trees of which Alfred lifts our eyes, by a rising flock of buzzards, to the sun-shafts illuminating the slopes of The Dodds.

The fells in the background appear almost to vanish in the clouded blues of a far-distant sky, yet Alfred anchors this painting with the solidity of the rocks, sheep and a tree in the foreground – bringing us down to the materiality of the lower valley that was to be flooded just a few years after he created this image of serenity and silence.
