Description

The current bridge on Stramongate, a key throughfare in the town of Kendal, dates from 1794 (though it’s understood that an earlier bridge is incorporated in it). This painting by William takes a painter’s perspective of the bridge from the south bank of the River Kent looking upstream. A 21st century view would acknowledge the site of the Bridge Inn to the left, and the building visible on the right over the bridge’s parapets as the Riverside Hotel. There’s a wonderful Italianate feel to this picture, with the golden and tan colours of the bridge between a cloud-mottled blue sky matched by the blue of the river.
