Autumn Afternoon on the Rothay – Greeting Card

“The Rothay, is a greater volume, but calmer, clearer and shining where the sunlight dapples through the wych-elms, darkling in deep pools in the dense oak shade”

(W.T. Palmer – p32 The English Lakes)

The under-Loughrigg road from Ambleside to Rydal hasn’t changed that much since the 1920’s when this rustic scene was painted. Here, Alfred has caught the mellow warm-cool colours of Autumn perfectly.
