Description
“It was just over the hill from here, at Embleton, that the famous sword now in the British Museum was found, an iron blade in a bronze sheath, with red and green jewels on the hilt – the Excalibur of some ancient Briton not without wealth and art” [The Lake Counties – W. G. Collingwood, p152]
Here William presents a long commanding view down towards the lake, with the Skiddaw massif soaring up into the lofty heights on the right-handside, while a handful of conifer trees hug the lower reaches of the Lorton Fells on the left, as the marshy contours of the pale green valley – painted in diminishing tones, roll down to the shore.
