Description
This familiar Lakeland view is dominated by the striking peak of ‘ The Old Man of Coniston’ as it rises majestically over the lake. Small groups of buildings form the old village, nestling between flanks of the fell and wooded shore, as smoke rises in the still autumn air. This distinctive pastoral scene was painted when Alfred was living in Hawkshead, and shows a similar view to the one Ruskin would have enjoyed from his house in Brantwood, just a quarter of a mile away.
