“On this evening in late May, when there was a lightness as well as warmth in the air, the rugged Haystacks looked immense as they caught the light above the broad shadow in the valley. A very lovely day was drawing to a gracious end”
[WHC – Lakeland Portraits, p48]
The distinctly green-blue colour of Buttermere lake is caused by the slate from the Honister Quarry above, and no other lake in the district is quite like it. In this painting, William shows what he describes as ‘the long clean curves of the lower ground and the angular and rather vertical crags above’ the finished painting was completed in his studio from a colour study and a drawing.
