Description
“Little Langdale is honeycombed with slate quarries, some of them of great antiquity. Slate-quarrying means hard work in all kinds of weather and a certain amount of risk from falling rock, though not as great as was formerly the case”
[WHC – Lakeland Portraits, p82]
This pastoral painting encapsulates the intimate relationship forged between man and the landscape, which the Lake District has become well renowned for. Little Langdale, as well as being dotted with remarkably ancient farms and fields, has many old, disused slate quarries, littered rather forlornly amongst all the rolling fields, although there is one that is still working.
