Description

“Mighty things have been achieved upon these bastions, and many a man grows old with a picture in his mind, that he conjures up sometimes by the fireside, of evenings on the Pinnacle”

[WHC in: Prose of Lakeland – B. L. Thompson, p177]

This vivid image of Esk Buttress was witnessed after William had been climbing on Scafell with two friends in thundery weather conditions in 1936. Several weeks later, and with the help of a quick pencil sketch procured at the time, William painted the picture from memory in his studio. He gave the mountain slopes a deep plum colour with veils of translucent mist toward the summit, merging into the glowing golden rays of the sky. It is undoubtedly one of the most haunting and memorable of his paintings.
