Description
Painted from an unusual viewpoint, high on the slopes of Whiteless Pike, William expertly captures the power and beauty of the Buttermere valley. Along the valley floor, the foot of the lake can be seen, shimmering as a gust of wind blows across the surface. Beyond the lake, a soaring ridgeline rises steeply from the valley floor, formed from ancient volcanic rock roughly hewn by glacial action over millennia. Prominent to the right is High Stile, its rocky nose dropping steeply to the lake shore; caught in sunlight at the centre is High Crag, with Scarth Gap and Haystacks further along the ridgeline to the left. Forming the skyline in the far distance to the left are Great Gable, Scafell Pike, Scafell and Kirk Fell, while, right of centre, Pillar appears above Burtness Combe.
