Description

Known as the Castle Rock of Triermain to the Scottish novelist, poet and playwright Sir Walter Scott, this prominent crag-girt promontory at the southern end of St Johns in the Vale is well-known to climbers due to the quality of the routes on it. William has painted it as the shadows lengthen on a quiet autumn evening, with the Rock appearing ghost-like above woods and russet bracken. Stybarrow Dodd and Watson’s Dodd loom spectrally in the background.
