Description
Enclosed by high fells on all sides but to the south, Levers Water lies in a corrie above the picturesque village of Coniston. A steep, rough track leads up to the tarn, built by miners of a bygone era, to create a dam that fed the sluices. In this ethereal painting, William captures an air of natural majesty, entwined with the past history, that still surrounds the tarn. Painted on a hazy still day, he delfty captures the contrast between the quiet lake, reflecting the dark fells beyond, and the bright autumnal colours of the foreground.
“The attraction of this subject was the contrast between the quiet lake, reflecting the sky and the dark mountain behind it, and the brilliant autumn colours of the foreground, where the bracken had turned to rich reds and ochres among the grey rocks.
“As usual, before beginning to paint, I spent some time walking round the lake, deciding exactly where the various forms would best balance one another within the picture. The foreground rocks had to lead the eye naturally towards the water, while the great sweep of the mountain behind provided the necessary feeling of strength and permanence.
“The first washes were laid broadly over the whole sheet to establish the general light and atmosphere. Afterwards the mountain was painted with increasingly stronger tones, while the reflections were carried down with broad horizontal brushstrokes to preserve the stillness of the water.
“The final stages consisted largely of strengthening the dark accents among the rocks and adding the varied autumn colours of the bracken with quick, lively touches. These smaller passages of stronger colour helped to give life to the painting without disturbing the essential peace of the scene.” – William Heaton Cooper, Mountain Painter, p.4.
