Description

Marsden Rocks, formed of Magnesian Limestone, lie east of South Shields in the NE of England. Originally (as depicted by Alfred here) they featured a prominent arch. However, this collapsed following violent storms in 1996.

Alfred's painting, dating perhaps to the early 20th century, shows local fishermen landing their catch from a coble on the beach next to the Rocks. In the distance, we can make out the distinctive outlines of Tynemouth Lighthouse and Tynemouth Priory and Castle.

Set within a deep black beveled frame.
