Description
Shamrock is the name given to the great crag lying west of Pillar Rock. Above it, the airy Shamrock Traverse takes the walker to one of the finest rock amphitheatres in the Lake District, and the place of many of its earliest recorded rock climbs, featuring famous climbers such as the Abraham Brothers of Keswick, and John Atkinson, a local shepherd and cooper, who made the first recorded ascent of Pillar Rock on July 9th 1826.
This is a reproduction of one of many drawings by William Heaton Cooper to illustrate the Fell & Rock Climbing Club guides in the 1930s. His love of climbing and his fine draftsmanship made him an obvious choice to illustrate the official guides.
