Description
High above the Langdale valley, nestled in a hollow below Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark, lies Stickle Tarn. In this striking painting, William captures the tarn from an unusual viewpoint, between the two becks feeding into the tarn from the south-east. Painted on a winter afternoon with intermittent bursts of sunshine, William paints the scene bathed in light. Snow still clings to the higher fells, with Harrison Stickle rising on the left and the crags of Pavey Ark on the right, while a light dusting covers the fell surrounding the tarn.
"What a solemn and impressive place it is on a winter afternoon, when the low sun casts great shadows from each rock buttress of Pavey Ark, when Harrison Stickle throws its long shadow across the scree below, and when buttress, gully and shadow are mirrored, darker and greener, in the still waters of the tarn.
"One characteristic of many Lakeland valleys is their very definite step formation of level or hollowed portions separated by steep drops, often graced by a waterfall or two. The higher steps are sometimes hanging valleys, and if anyone wants to see a really good example I would suggest a visit to Stickle Tarn." – William Heaton Cooper, The Tarns of Lakeland, p184.
