Description

This panoramic perspective painted by Alfred depicts a skyline of some of Lakeland’s best-

known peaks. From left to right, we can see Wetherlam, Little Stand, Crinkle Crags,

Scafell Pike, Bowfell, Allen Crags, the Langdale Pikes, High Raise and Ullscarf.

The house nestled in the trees near the centre of the painting is Calgarth Hall,

which dates from the early 16th century. The Calgarth estate surrounding the Hall

was the site of Calgarth Village, initiated by flying boat manufacturers Short Brothers in 1941.

In 1945 the people of Lakeland welcomed three hundred child Holocaust Survivors

into their community here.
