Description
A striking winter scene painted from the slopes of Robinson, William depicts the view down and over Buttermere, with the steep crags of High Stile and Red Pike rising above. The winter sun illuminates the snow still hugging the fellside and fields at the head of the lake, whilst casting evocative shadows where its light can no longer reach. A lone tree dominates the foreground, bereft of leaves as if waiting in anticipation for the first buds of spring – a stark contrast to the evergreen Scots pines clustered together at the head of the lake.
