Thirlmere, Looking North - Original Painting by Alfred Heaton Cooper (1863-1929)

Description

One can practically hear the gentle breeze and trickling beck in the foreground of this painting; a viewpoint nestled within the South-Western flanks of Thirlmere.

This woodland is curious, as vast swathes of the area are the result of plantations of non-native firs by the Manchester Corporation, presenting columns of vertical trunks throughout, resulting in patches of forest unlike any others in the District, where nearby Borrowdale  forests are ancient, organic, sprawling and dancing.
